Beyond Medicine

Baking Persian Cookies

Since 2013, my mom and I have baked traditional Persian cookies using recipes passed down from my grandmother and great-aunts. From Nowruz celebrations to special events, baking together has become one of our favorite traditions. This year, we’re taking it on an even bigger scale for a wedding!

Sewing

In 2020, I learned to sew from my mom, continuing a skill passed down through generations of women in our family. What began as a way to spend time together has grown into designing and creating pieces that are completely our own.

  • A white jumpsuit with a hand sewn fabric flower at the waist
  • A strapless gown in coral and gold brocade
  • Arta and her mom choosing fabric from a wall of bolts
  • Cobalt and yellow embroidered fabrics laid out on a counter
  • Arta pinning a pink dress pattern across a glass table
  • A white shift dress painted with a single orange poppy
  • A dusty rose shift dress scattered with embroidered flowers
  • A red wide leg jumpsuit with a gold brocade bodice

Floral Arrangements

A trip to Trader Joe’s to find their new selection of flowers, mix and matching seasonal blooms, and coming home to make a vase arrangement or a bouquet for someone I love is my favorite little form of meditation.
